Building
The Town of Riverdale regulates building, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing work within the City limits. Regulations, standards, and guidelines are established by the adoption of the Uniform Building Code, The National Electrical Code, Uniform Mechanical Code, the Uniform Plumbing Code and the Iowa State Building Code.

Building permits are required before most work can begin and inspections are required during the work.

Zoning
The Town of Riverdale adopted a comprehensive Zoning Ordinance which regulates land uses and establishes separate types of zoning districts. A Board of Adjustment hears requests for variances. Public hearings are required for variance requests. Members of each Board are appointed citizen members. There are no elected officials serving on the Boards.
